The projects comprised construction of new motorway corridors, lane extensions, and upgrades to existing routes. Surveys involved preliminary control establishment, pre-construction topographical design surveys, project monitoring of adjacent structures and sensitive ecological areas, and progressive earthworks and setting out surveys.

Auckland’s rail network was upgraded to enable more frequent and reliable commuter services, and prepare for electrification in time for the delivery of Auckland’s new electric trains in 2013.

With funding from Central Government totalling $1.6 billion, KiwiRail started work in 2006 to carry out a series of projects to deliver more frequent and reliable train services. Commuters are now enjoying the benefits of this work, and the recent completion of the electrification of the rail network, in preparation for Auckland’s new electric trains, which began running in 2014.

Works included building new infrastructure needed to electrify the network from Papakura to Swanson ($500 Million), and completing other improvements to track infrastructure to enable improved commuter rail services.

Survey input involved control installation, as-built surveys for design and dimension checking, and set-out of rail, platform, and building structures. This project involved working at all times either within a live rail environment, or in short term shutdown zones.

Previously known as Manukau City Council Chambers, the 45-year-old building comprises a Council administration block adjoined by circular structures housing the Council Chambers and Committee rooms. With the amalgamation of the Auckland Council in 2010, the structure is currently being re-assessed as to its most suitable future use by Auckland Council.

Surveying to date has involved a comprehensive control and topographical survey of the site and it’s environs. Works also include a detailed underground services survey.

Once complete, the Star Mountain Plaza will be a landmark project for Papua New Guinea. Designed for a mix of uses, the Star Mountain Plaza will be a place for both locals and visitors to work, live, stay, shop and dine. Celebrating the local cultural identity, the central vision of the project is reflected in the design by Ignite Architects.

Surveying involved establishing of control and design surveys at pre-construction phase.

Selected roading and airport upgrade projects were undertaken on the islands of Tutuila, Ofu-Olosega, and Tau.

Survey works involved control and mapping surveys in tropical jungle and coastal zones, and public consultation with local village Matai (chiefs).

Survey works comprised set-out of revised and extended ship structural alignment, and monitoring of vessel deflection during transition from water to land-based servicing.

Completing these works involved operating on suspended land-side servicing cradles, as well as on the water, which was particularly challenging.

In the late 1970s, ski-field development on Mt Ruapehu was expanded to include chairlift and infrastructure establishment at the existing Whakapapa and the newly founded Turoa ski fields. Works included roading access, building and chairlift design, and setting out surveys. Detailed pre-construction chairlift surveys were undertaken at multiple sites to determine a final suitable and safe alignment for each chairlift section.

Waipipi Iron Sands ran a mining operation from 1971 – 1987 that extracted iron ore from iron sand deposits along an inland coastal region near Waverley, North Island.

Gravity and magnetic separation were used to produce concentrate, which was pumped through pipelines to an offshore buoy for loading into large, specially designed international tankers.

Survey input involved test-bore drilling, set-out and planning surveys, volume and dredge line directional surveys, offshore docking, pipeline structures, and specialist iron monitor instruments flown in helicopters.

The project was a Ministry of Education design and build contract to deliver what was, at the time, New Zealand’s first public secondary school to be built in 20 years.

The educational philosophy that drove the design of this school was focused around dissolving traditional subject boundaries, integrating more with the community, and an overarching direction of lifelong learning.

The design also incorporated a range of environmentally sustainable features that would reduce the school’s energy use, and the buildings themselves were detailed so that they could be operated as flexible teaching devices, extending the scope of secondary education to meet the challenges of the future.

Survey inputs required set-out and dimension control to assist in the fast-tracked design and detailing that was needed to conform to strict programme deadlines.
